WELLSBORO, PA – Pennsylvania State Police requested the closure of Leonard Harrison State Park around 1:11 PM on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, due to a psychiatric emergency.
Wellsboro fire and EMS crews responded to 4869 Route 660 in Shippen Township at the Leonard Harrison State Park around 12:45 PM as Pennsylvania State Police needed assistance with an individual who had climbed over the rail at the lower overlook area at the PA Grand Canyon.
Wellsboro ambulance crew was first to arrive on scene by 1:06 PM and fire personnel followed a few minutes later.
Visitors at the Leonard Harrison State Park were asked to leave the park due to the serious ongoing emergency situation. The park was closed to the public shortly after 1:11 PM.
An engine crew from Elkland was requested to standby at Wellsboro during the time that Wellsboro fire and EMS crews assisted state troopers.
All EMS personnel were cleared from the scene around 7:27 PM, after being at the park for over six hours. Also most Wellsboro fire personnel were also cleared to return to their station. It is unknown how many firefighters stayed behind with Pennsylvania State Police. However, the last firefighter(s) left the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon around 11:19 PM. Pennsylvania State Police and state park personnel remained at the park.
There was no official outcome provided on the welfare of the the young lady that state troopers and others were trying to assist.
