FNN Article Update © Wednesday, June 10, 2026. – Update June 13, 2026 & July 6, 2026.
DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA – On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, around 5:44 PM a fatal bicycle accident occurred around the Dollar General store along East Main Street near Knoxville Borough.
The incident unfolded as a pickup truck being driven by a 74-year-old male made contact with a male in his 60’s who was riding a bike along Route 49. An eye witness was said to have seen the incident in which the bicyclist was hit.
Crary Hose Company and EMS personnel from Sabinsville were dispatched to the scene around 5:44 PM. Fire personnel were quickly on scene and CPR was started immediately after personnel checked for a pulse.
Knoxville-Deerfield Volunteer Fire Company was next to be dispatched around 5:48 PM. When Knoxville arrived on scene they would set up command of the incident.
As additional units responded it was noted that there was a trauma arrest on scene and one other person was possibly injured. Sadly the coroner was requested to the scene around 6:02 PM.
A family member of the victim was allowed into the scene just after 7:00 PM. That individual was guided in by fire personnel.
The tragic crash caused the closure of a section Route 49 and a section of Route 249, since the accident occurred near that intersection.
Also a section of Route 249 N. at the Austinburg Road intersection was shut down by Troupsburg fire personnel who were requested to assist with traffic control. The Troupsburg crew was later released around 7:13 PM as they were replaced by a PennDOT crew who took over traffic control in that area.
Northbound traffic was detoured around the accident using Route 249 and Austinburg Road (Route 4009). While Southbound traffic sent around crash using Route 249, Merrick Hill Road, and Locey Creek Road (Route 4017).
Pennsylvania State Police had Sabinsville ambulance crew hold off on transporting the male driver who was operating the pickup that was involved in the crash until Troopers arrived on scene to speak with him. State troopers made it to the scene by 6:20 PM and they immediately started their investigation into the tragic incident. The shaken driver was transported by ambulance to UPMC Wellsboro Hospital to be evaluated shortly after 7:00 PM. The driver did not suffer any injuries in the accident and was wearing his seat belt. Pennsylvania State Police did not disclose the driver’s name or hometown in their accident report.
The vehicle involved in striking the bicyclist was towed from the scene by Bryan’s Towing and the road was finally cleared and reopened around 10:00 PM. All fire crews that were still on scene at that time were able to return to their stations.
* Pennsylvania State Police reported that 65-year-old Jesse A. Mead of Knoxville, PA, was struck by a pickup while he was riding his bicycle. According to police, Mead had entered the roadway at an unsafe time and was struck by the pickup truck. Tragically Mead passed away at the scene of the crash. Police noted that Mead’s next of kin was notified.
State police did not provide any information on the driver of the pickup truck involved in this incident. When FNN followed up on this article on Monday, July 6, 2026, no court record was found with the incident number provided in the Pennsylvania State Police Release. It appears that no charges will be filed against the driver involved in this fatal accident which seems to reflect what police stated in their June release. The fault of the accident was placed on the bicyclist. If any new information is released FNN will add it to this article in an update.
