PENNSYLVANIA – The start of the LIHEAP (Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program is being delayed, with specific states like Pennsylvania having paused some grant distributions due to the federal budget delay and ongoing government shutdown, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. While the previous year’s season in Pennsylvania was extended, the current year’s funding has stalled, thus causing the delay in applications and distribution for many states awaiting federal guidance.
The ongoing government shutdown has resulted in a pause of the appropriations process, which in turn is preventing the timely release of federal funds for LIHEAP. This has resulted in a delay in the funding cycle, leading many states to postpone the opening of their LIHEAP applications. Also in past years, there have been reports of staff layoffs in federal departments overseeing LIHEAP, which could impact the program’s ability to function efficiently.
This delay could put vulnerable families at risk of having to ration heat or cut back on other essential expenses like food and medicine, although not advised, people have had no choice when funds are not available. People are hoping that things are ironed out before situations like this actually occur.
Presently individuals may need to wait longer for the LIHEAP application to open in their state. The exact start date for applications is still uncertain, as many states continue waiting for federal guidance before they can even begin processing applications for the new LIHEAP season.
Individuals are encouraged to contact their local LIHEAP office and check for updates on when applications will open. then be prepared to apply immediately once applications are open, as funding is often provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
