Morris command issued a recall of responding fire apparatus from Blossburg and Middlebury with the exception of Morris and Wellsboro fire crews at 3:56 PM.
Numerous ambulances did report to the scene due to the number of possible injuries.
Early reports indicated that a car struck the school bus. However, according to Morris Fire Chief Dean Kreger, the car driver simply crowded the bus off the road. Due to the car driver’s actions, the bus driver ended up going off the side of the roadway and into a small ditch which caused the bus to tilt slightly onto its side up against the embankment. The car driver continued on their way.
Pennsylvania State Police arrived at the accident site around 4:06 PM and members of the school district arrived on scene around 4:10 PM. State Police are handling the investigation into this incident.
Parents of the students involved in the crash were believed to have been notified by the school district, but two parents told FNN they were not notified by the school district about the accident.
Ambulances transported seven students to UPMC Wellsboro Hospital for further evaluations as a precaution. None were actually injured in the incident. The bus driver was also not injured.
FEMA was notified of the incident and a number of emergency vehicles were still on scene at 4:45 PM. However, By 4:50 PM some fire units were released to return to their stations.
A parent confirmed that the bus involved was bus #287 of the Wellsboro Area School District.
The remaining Morris and Wellsboro fire crews were cleared to return to their stations around 5:30 PM.
The bus did not suffer any serious damage, only a scratch on the side, FNN was told. White’s Towing assisted in getting the bus out of the ditch and back onto the road.
