Mountaineers have Close Battle at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Mountaineer baseball team traveled to Shepherdstown, West Virginia to compete against the Rams on Friday (April 3) afternoon, with Mansfield dropping both.

Game One: Shepherd 9, Mansfield 3

Shepherd opened the can early in the first inning by with three runs.

The Mounties found an opportunity in the third inning where Billy Riggs hit a single down the left line, which allowed Ryan Sekulski to bring in the first run of the game, 3-1.

Both teams sat in silence until the fifth inning where, Nick Ledger had a single up the middle for Riggs to score, and Brinden Floyd had a single to the left side for Ledger to score.

Five more runs were added by the  Rams offense in the fifth, leading the score 8-3.

Shepherd picked up another run in the sixth that ultimately ended the game for the Mounties, 9-3.

Game One: Shepherd 12, Mansfield 8

The Mountaineers got the lead for the first time of the series, thanks to a single to center field from Peter Tadic, that brought in Sekulski.

Five runs were given up in the first giving the rams space to work with, 5-1.

In the second, Cooper Rother led the team with his first ever collegiate home run. 

Right after, a sacrificial fly ball to left field brought in Floyd shortening the margin.

Tanner Hoffman had a two RBI single in the third to left field, where Ledger and Riggs scored for the lead 6-5.

Sekulski had a deep single to center field which brought in Rother, and Slade McTigue placed one and the same spot for Hoffman to come home, 8-5.

The Mounties scoring stopped abruptly and the Rams were able to come back and pull away for the win, 12-8.
