International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4th, to honor firefighters for their service internationally, remember firefighters who lost their lives during service. It also commemorates firefighters who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks.
It even serves as a day to thank current firefighters. Just to note – the date coincides with St. Florian’s Day, the patron saint of firefighters.
The first International Firefighters’ Day was 27 years ago, as the first one was held on May 4, 1999.
Many may not know that IFFD was established after a proposal by Australian firefighter, JJ Edmondson, was made on January 4, 1999, following the deaths of five firefighters fighting a bushfire in Australia on December 2, 1998.
So from the volunteer staff at FIRST News Now PA, we extend our thanks to everyone who serves or has served a position relating to the firefighting field. We also send out prayers to the families and comrades who have lost loved ones while helping others.
One way FNN tries to help support our local fire companies is by sharing their annual events, fundraisers, as well as, images and public posts. FNN has always done this since our launch over 10 years ago, on March 28, 2015.
