MANSFIELD, PA. – The Mansfield Mountaineers men’s basketball team claimed a gritty victory over PSAC rival Bloomsburg, by a score of 72-68, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, inside Decker Gymnasium.
Four Mountaineers scored in double figures with Sterling Scott leading the way with 18 points. Diarmid Stewart had 17 points and a team high nine rebounds. Mansfield out rebounded the Huskies 37-30 including 11-2 in offensive rebounds.
The Mounties (3-22, 2-17 PSAC) surrendered the first seven points of the contest to the Huskies (7-18, 4-14 PSAC). Mansfield found themselves in an 11-3 hole six minutes in before responding with a 14-4 run to claim the lead. Scott had eight points in that run.
The lead would change four times leading into the final minute when Scott tied the game on a dunk. Mansfield claimed the lead with 21 seconds remaining on a Nasir Brown layup. Mansfield led at the half 33-31.
The teams traded baskets and traded the lead through the first four minutes of the second half and finally knotted things back up 38-38 on a Darrien Berrios Rivera three. More traded leads led to a 44-44 tie through ten minutes of the second half.
With 8:54 to play, Ty Barret gave the Mountaineers the lead for good on a floater, going up 48-47. Mansfield would end the game outscoring Bloomsburg 26-21 the rest of the quarter. Barret and Stewart had nine and eight points to close out the game. Mansfield made six free throws, which included the two from Barrett, with three seconds remaining to put the game away. The Mounties would take the game 72-68.
