COVINGTON, PA – Blossburg Fire Department responded to what was believed to be a gas leak in the 790 block of Canada Road in Covington Township, early Wednesday evening around 7:05 PM.
The original call about the gas leak came into the Pennsylvania State Police and they reached out to the 911 Dispatch Center. It was reported that a gas was bubbling from the roadway in the area near 795 Canada Road.
Blossburg fire personnel requested that UGI be notified as they arrived in the area by 7:11 PM. Around 7:22 PM, the Blossburg firefighter confirmed there was a gas leak under the road. It was also noted there seemed to be a bump in the road.
Fire personnel then requested that a PennDOT representative be notified of the situation, as well.
UGI personnel arrived on scene around 7:32 PM.
At 8:02 PM PennDOT representative arrived on scene. At that same time, Blossburg fire personnel notified the 911 Center that this was NOT a gas leak. As for what caused the issue with the road, Blossburg Fire Chief Andrew O’Connor did not know. It is believed, however, that recent construction work in the area played a role in the roadway issue on Wednesday evening. PennDOT representative and others remained on scene to take care of the issue.
By 8:14 PM the scene was turned over to PennDOT and construction as most of Blossburg’s fire personnel were cleared to return to their station with the exception of Blossburg Fire Police.
