COVINGTON, PA – A Covington man sits behind bars after he was alleged to have been in violation of Megan’s Law after an incident that was said to have occurred late last year.
According to Pennsylvania State Police (Troop F, Mansfield Barracks), the alleged incident occurred on Sunday, September 21, 2025, around 1:20 PM and where the victim was listed as “Society.”
Police reported that on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the Troop F – Mansfield barracks initiated an investigation into potential Megan’s Law violation after receiving a tip from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. The violations were alleged to have been committed by 46-year-old Kenneth Charles Schmidt of Covington, PA.
The ensuing investigation revealed that Schmidt had failed to report various information which he is required to report under the conditions of Megan’s Law.
On Friday, February 13, 2026, Schmidt was charged through District Court 04-3-04 with the following criminal offenses from the incident dated for September 21, 2025;
- 6 counts of PA, Title 18, Section 4915.1(a) (1), Failure to Register with PSP – (2nd Degree Felony).
- 2 Counts of PA, Title 18, Section 7512(a), Unlawful Use of a Communication Facility – (3rd Degree Felony).
- 1 Count of PA, Title 18, Section 4915.1(a)(3), Failure to Provide Accurate Information (1st Degree Felony).
- 2 Counts of PA, Title 18, Section 4904(a)(1), Unsworn Falsification to Authorities (2nd Degree Misdemeanor).
Kenneth Charles Schmidt was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Tioga County Prison. Schmidt remains in prison as he was unable to pay the monetary bail of $75,000 that was set for him on February 15, 2026,
Schmidt’s preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at 9:00 AM in front of Magisterial District Judge James R. Edgcomb.
