MANSFIELD, PA – This is a painting by Sherri Stager of what the original Case’s Cider Mill in Mansfield, PA, looked like many years ago.
According to painter Sherri Stager, in a brief 2021 online interview, the classic cider mill was located on East Elmira Street in downtown Mansfield, until the the flood of 1972. Severe flooding from Hurricane Agnes hit the downtown area hard and destroyed the original mill and most of the equipment. That is when the business was moved to its present location along West Wellsboro Street. The Corp of Engineers would later build the dike system to prevent future devastating floods in the local area. The original apple press would also be moved to the new cider mill and used for another thirty years.
“The cider mill was about a 100 yards from my backyard and was painted bright red. What wonderful memories I have of waking up on autumn Saturday mornings to the “chug, chug, chug” sound of the apple grinder. That meant they were making cider! Chester Case owned an old blue pick-up truck back then and I recall seeing him or his son, David, driving down the country lane filled with crates of apples. Sometimes they would let us neighborhood kids help fill the cider jugs. The best part was getting a Dixie cup of cider to sample,” Sherri Stager recalled back in 2021.
Case’s Mansfield Cider Mill now sits along West Wellsboro Street located at 16469 Route 6 in Mansfield, PA. It is in operation only a few months each year, but it is still a popular place to drop in, and grab some delicious apple cider which is made like used to be nearly 80 years ago.
Case’s Mansfield Cider Mill is a family-owned business that has been in operation since 1946, producing fresh, unpasteurized apple cider using locally grown apples. The mill has a long-standing tradition, with a fourth-generation cider maker, and showcases historical artifacts, including an antique cider press, jam, and other seasonal goods,
At the cider mill a bushel of apples can make between three to three and half gallons of apple cider. The cider mill makes approximately two thousand gallons of apple cider per year.
It is so interesting to know that the cider mill produces unpasteurized apple cider right on-site, using a mix of locally grown apples depending on what is ripe. The mill also sells various other products, such as local honey and syrup, jams, and apple butter.
Visitors can check out an antique cider press and a collection of historical artifacts when they stop by during their business season. Case’s Cider Mill will reopen in September of 2026, as the season ended in early November. Each season run from September to early November.
