MANSFIELD, PA – Nichole Barnes and Eric Warriner of Mansfield, PA, met back in 2013, and a spark quickly connected both of them together. However, life’s circumstances interrupted the couple’s blooming relationship, and forced the two to take an unwanted pause for a few years. The young couple excitedly reconnected again in 2016 and by 2020 Nichole and Eric tied the knot of matrimony.
Today the couple has have three children ages 7, 11, and 15 at home and Nichole is slightly over five months pregnant with twins, and the couple is elated as the due date slowly draws closer. Although both parents are excited, there is concern due to issues with the pregnancy that could cause the twins to be delivered as soon as 25 weeks or six months into the pregnancy because of Selective Fetal Growth Restriction. Selective Fetal Growth Restriction is a twin pregnancy complication where the twins share one placenta and the blood vessels inside the placenta link the twins together. In Nichole’s case, the condition causes blood flow complications for one or both twins. Often due to blood flow issues one twin may not get the needed blood flow of nutrients needed from the shared placenta. It is already known that one baby is smaller than the other due to this complication. This also puts Nichole in the category of being at high risk for preterm labor or having other complications.
Presently doctors and the couple are hoping Nichole will be able to carry the twins for at least 32 to 34 weeks. Nevertheless, Nichole will not be able to go beyond 34 weeks gestational time. Last week doctors found an artery in the placenta that is causing some of the back and forth blood flow dilemma, but there is no way to fix it. Due to the expected early delivery the twins will have to be placed in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) as they will be born to early and this could lead to health complications for each baby. The twins could easily spend a few months in the NICU as their body and lungs mature.
With all this taking place with this pregnancy, Nichole has to be seen by specialists as the twins need to be monitored often, which means a lot of traveling for the couple combined with a loss of work hours and income for the growing family. In fact, a lot traveling will also be needed once the twins are placed in the NICU where they will need constant care as they grow.
Family and friends of the couple are praying for the best outcome as the parents have been warned that there is a possibility that smaller twin could pass or both twins could be lost during the weeks ahead.
