RALEIGH, NC – 76-year-old Dennis Hamlin, father to NASCAR star Denny Hamlin, passed away on Sunday from injuries he suffered in a house fire, according to the NASCAR association.
The fire was located in the Stanley community of Gaston County, in North Carolina, where the home was mostly involved in flames when fire units started arriving on scene. The fire was reported around 6:19 PM.
Authorities stated that two individuals were found outside the two-story, four-bedroom home when emergency services arrived at 6:27 PM. Both Dennis and his wife 69-year-old Mary Lou Hamlin were rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Denny’s mother would be transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem for treatment of her injuries. It was said, she was listed in critical condition.
Monday evening, December 29th, officials from the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services provided a news release that confirmed that Dennis Hamlin had passed away at the hospital due to his injuries suffered due to the fire.
The fire is still under investigation, however, due to the extent of fire and the structural collapse, of the home officials have stated the cause is currently undetermined. According to local property tax records the home is owned by a company called Won One Real Estate that lists Denny Hamlin as its manager.
It was said that Denny Hamlin had dedicated his most recent NASCAR win (October at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to his father, as Denny noted that his father’s health had been in declining.
In a release by NASCAR, they pointed out that Denny Hamlin ranks in a tie for 10th on the NASCAR Cup Series’ all-time win list with 60 big-league victories, including three Daytona 500 triumphs. But those achievements on stock-car racing’s biggest stage have a foundation firmly rooted in his family’s backing, with Dennis and Mary Lou providing support at every stage of their son’s development.
The Hamlin family has suffered a terrible loss and at this time they need some personal time. Fans across the nation are sending prayers and supportive words to Denny Hamlin, his mother and his family.
