MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team’s first half lead slipped away, and they fell at home to Army 21-14, on Saturday Nov. 8.
The Mounties (5-2) were led offensively by Weston Bellows, continuing an excellent season, rushing 34 carries for 121 yards and a pair of scores. Marcus Quaker was 5-11 for 97 yards through the air.
For the Mountaineer defense, Jackson Taylor set a Mansfield sprint football single game record with 19 tackles. Noah Bennett had nine tackles a fumble recovery and an interception.
The Mounties put together a world class drive to open the game, operating a 21-play 74-yard scoring drive. It was punctuated by a Bellows two-yard score on fourth down. it was the second fourth and short converted on the drive. The entire drive took up 14:46, Mansfield led 7-0 at the end of the first.
Bennett would come up with a fumble recovery, in the ensuing Army (7-0) possession, to give Mansfield possession back.
Bellows would score his second touchdown of the day on a 22-yard run. Mansfield was up 14-0 after a Nolan Zona extra point.
Army would cut the lead in the final 3 minutes of the half on a Gabriel Bolivar two-yard score, cutting the lead to 14-7.
Army would have a chance to score before the half again. Bennett would put a halt to the drive with an interception in the final seconds of the half. Mansfield would lead 14-7 at halftime.
Army would tie the game midway through the second quarter. Backed up on their own three they were able to strike in two plays. Marek Arbogast scored on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Kyle West, bringing the score even at 14-14.
After Mansfield failed on a fourth and two on the ensuing possession, the Black Knights put together their own 13 play drive to claim the lead. They would score on a West 1 yard run on fourth and goal to go up 21-14.
Mansfield would drive to try and tie but Army would deny, coming up with the game sealing interception. The Black Knights drained the rest of the clock to steal the victory 21-14.
Before the Game, the Mansfield sprint football team honored seniors, Eli Swan, Ian Mapp, DeShawn Ards, Austin Bayer, Noah Bennett, Braedan Oravecz, and David Allison.
UP NEXT: Mansfield closes out the season on Friday Nov. 14, as they travel to take on Molloy University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m..
